So, not a great day then? – banned book QOTD

A young child screams and stomps, clearly having a bad day.

“Stupid stupid stupid. Stupid. Stupid body. Stupid brain. Stupid boys and stupid girls. Stupid everything.”

#1 on the American Library Association’s list of Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2020.

So, sometimes we don’t have anything profound to say. We want to support Alex Gino, whose book George has often been challenged or banned across the US. Want to read more from frequently-banned books? Draw inspiration from our sacred texts.

And boy, don’t we sometimes feel George too?

Being transgender, being gay, being bi, being short, being joyful when you hear that song, these are not things we choose. They are things we are. And we aren’t always all of those things—or at least aware of those things—at all times of our lives. So it can be confusing for well-meaning, loving people in our lives.

So, another quote from George: “Well, you can’t control who your children are, but you can certainly support them, am I right?” And what if they’re not your children? What if they’re God’s children? Do you think that God would want us to support you, love you, even if someone else think’s you’re wrong? Then you know what a parent’s love means. And God’s love is so much more powerful, unimaginable.

One other thing…

While you’re at it, be patient with yourself; know you can grow. It’s hard to love someone in the way they need, but it’s important. We all do the best we can, given what our life has equipped us for… until we become more. We often need to be more. Because, in the words of Alex Gino in George, “Asexuality was definitely more complicated than kale.”

True story. Go in peace. Be more.
